The History Of Christianity In India:How the Church Come to India, by Thomas G. Trewavas, will be published on October 30 by Regnery Books.
It is available for pre-order at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, IndieBound, and the B&N e-bookstore.
The book has been edited by John L. Miller, the author of the critically acclaimed The Bible in India.
“The book was designed with India in mind, with the hope that readers can find something of value to share with each other and their communities,” Trewavalas said in a press release.
“There is an urgent need to bring India to the forefront of our knowledge and understanding about the religion and its history, both before and after the rise of Christianity.”
Trewavalias new book is a detailed and historically accurate history of Christianity that chronicles the evolution of the faith and the journey from a small community of followers in India to a major religion in the world.
The author describes the rise and fall of the Christian faith from the earliest years of the Roman Empire to the present day.
The book also discusses the role of the pope and his papacy in the spread of Christianity.
The new book follows a team of academics, historians, theologians and journalists as they travel the country to dig deeper into the history of the religion.
The books cover many different areas including the lives of the early Christian communities, their interactions with their Hindu neighbours and their interactions during the Islamic conquest, the development of Christian teaching in the Islamic world and the role the church played in bringing Christianity to the region, Trewava said.
The world’s first Christian book, published in 1482, was based on a detailed study of the life of the first Portuguese explorer, Francisco de Vila, who travelled across the Andaman Sea and Indian Ocean in the 1450s.
The history of Christians in India was also studied extensively in the late 19th century by the renowned historian, C. S. Ramachandran.
The authors have researched and written extensively about India, including its religious and political history, and their new book details the history and current state of the country’s churches and their relationship with the wider Hindu community.
Trewava added that while he does not want the book to be seen as a history of India, it will be a valuable resource for those who want to learn more about the church and how they are connected to Hinduism.TREKALAS BOOK DESIGN: Thomas G, Tredavas new book features the writings of Francis Sprenger, who was the first European to visit India in 1699, and other prominent personalities such as John Henry Newman and Robert Koch.
